Mayor Proposes Land Swap with Law University, Seeks Old Court Complex
Hubballi: Mayor Ramappa Badiger, Floor Leader Veeranna Savadi, and the Leader of the Opposition in the Hubballi-Dharwad Municipal Corporation (HDMC) are planning to meet Law Minister HK Patil in Bengaluru next week. The purpose of their visit is to discuss a potential land exchange.
Background
Recently, the HDMC general body meeting discussed a government proposal. The proposal suggested giving away 39 gunta land owned by HDMC, located in Amargol to the Law University. This land is adjacent to the proposed administrative building of the university. The government wanted this land for free on a 30-year lease to extend various amenities for the university.
After thorough discussion, the mayor said they would look into the matter once again.
Counter-Proposal
When Law Minister HK Patil visited Hubballi, he met with Mayor Badiger. During this meeting, the mayor proposed a compromise:
- HDMC would give 39 guntas (approximately 1 acre) of land to the Law University.
- In exchange, HDMC wants the old court complex premises.
The minister asked the HDMC officials to meet him in Bengaluru with a formal proposal to discuss this further.
Floor Leader Veeranna Savadi explained, “Our demand is fair. We would be giving away valuable land to the university. In return, we’re asking for something that would benefit the HDMC. If we get the old court complex, it would help us expand our office space. Currently, we’re facing a space shortage in our buildings.”
Savadi expressed hope that the minister would agree to this exchange. He believes it’s a win-win situation for both parties.
The HDMC officials are preparing their proposal for the upcoming meeting in Bengaluru. They hope to reach an agreement that satisfies both the Law University’s need for land and the HDMC’s requirement for additional office space.
